Responses of Various Spring Wheats to Vernalization.

چکیده

There is little information in the literature regarding North American varieties of spring wheat which are responsive to vernalization treatment. The same variety has been reported by different investigators to react positively or negatively to treatmenit. For example, VAN HOEK (3) obtained acceleration of maturity when springof wheat was vernalized, but treatmelnt of the same variety by GMELIN (1) gave no acceleration of flowering. WORT (4), using the same treatmenit with two different samples of Marquis wheat, found that the acceleration of flowerilig was 21 days in one case, and 2.6 days in the other, although growing conditions were similar. KOSTJUCENKO and ZARUBAILO (2) anid others suggest from experimiienits with cereals grown in northerni latitudes that at least part of the stage of vernalization (thermostage) may be completed during ripening and that this partial completion may reduce subsequent reactioni to treatment. The environment, acting on a developing seed, affects the behavior of the plant produced by the seed. Samples of various spring wheats (table I) obtained from the Departments of Agronomy at the State Universities of Illinois, North Dakota, and South Dakota,1 were vernalized in anl attempt to determnine which varieties respond to vernalization and if varieties grown in differenit areas respond differently. Positional cloning of the wheat vernalization gene VRN1.

Winter wheats require several weeks at low temperature to flower. This process, vernalization, is controlled mainly by the VRN1 gene. Using 6,190 gametes, we found VRN1 to be completely linked to MADS-box genes AP1 and AGLG1 in a 0.03-centimorgan interval flanked by genes Cysteine and Cytochrome B5. No additional genes were found between the last two genes in the 324-kb Triticum monococcum sequ...

Wheat gene for all seasons.

Diverse seasonal flowering behaviors drive global adaption of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum), the major crop grown in temperate zones worldwide. Many wheats are sown in autumn and flower only after experiencing the prolonged cold of winter (vernalization). By delaying flowering until spring, the requirement for vernalization minimizes the risk that frost-sensitive flowers and developing grain ...

Goldacre Paper The central role of the VERNALIZATION1 gene in the vernalization response of cereals

Many varieties of wheat (Triticum spp.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) require prolonged exposure to cold during winter in order to flower (vernalization). In these cereals, vernalization-induced flowering is controlled by the VERNALIZATION1 (VRN1) gene. VRN1 is a promoter of flowering that is activated by low temperatures. VRN1 transcript levels increase graduallyduringvernalization, with long...

Evaluation of gene expression changes of miR156 and miR172 and their targeted genes (AP2 & SPL3; vernalization factors) in two bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars

Floral transition through vernalization has a large influence on cold tolerance and agronomic traits in winter cereals. It is now apparent that in many plants small RNAs play critical roles in determination of the flowering time. There is evidence suggesting that the miR156 and miR172 families play a key role in the flowering transition of plants. In this study, the expression of two temporally ...

Identification of the VERNALIZATION 4 gene reveals the origin of spring growth habit in ancient wheats from South Asia.

Wheat varieties with a winter growth habit require long exposures to low temperatures (vernalization) to accelerate flowering. Natural variation in four vernalization genes regulating this requirement has favored wheat adaptation to different environments. The first three genes (VRN1-VRN3) have been cloned and characterized before. Here we show that the fourth gene, VRN-D4, originated by the in...
